Clean the World Named 2014 Florida Companies to Watch Winner

Award From GrowFL and the Edward Lowe Foundation Honors Upcoming Businesses Throughout the Sunshine State

ORLANDO, FL. — (Sept. 8, 2014) – Clean the World has been selected as one of this year’s Florida Companies to Watch winners. The social-enterprise, which recycles and distributes discarded hotel soap, is one of 50 leading second-stage companies selected from more than 500 nominations statewide. All 2014 winners will join an esteemed group of 150 Florida alumni honored over the past three years.

Florida Companies to Watch is an awards program that celebrates privately held second-stage companies headquartered in the state. To be eligible, applicants must employ between 6 and 99 full-time equivalent employees, and have between $750,000 and $50 million in annual revenue or working capital in place. Awardees are selected for demonstrating the intent and capacity to grow based on employee or sales growth, exceptional entrepreneurial leadership, sustainable competitive advantage, outstanding corporate culture, inspired community giving and other notable strengths.

“It is an incredible honor to be recognized along with so many outstanding second-stage companies from throughout Florida,” said Clean the World founder and CEO Shawn Seipler. “We were dreaming big when this all started five years ago in a single-car garage in downtown Orlando. But we never expected to come so far so fast. We now have 50 full-time employees, and have shipped more than 20 million bars of recycled soap to 96 countries. I hope we can be an example to other social entrepreneurs that with a great idea and an amazing team, the sky is the limit.”

Clean the World will be recognized along with the other winners during the Florida Company to Watch celebration on Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Hard Rock Live at Universal Orlando.

Washington Post Highlights Clean the World

Clean the World was featured in the Jan. 8 Travel section of The Washington Post.

The article details the history of our hotel soap recycling organization and the adventures of travel reporter Andrea Sachs, who helped collect, recycle and distribute hotel soaps during a recent two-day visit to Orlando, Fla.

Here’s an excerpt:

Since moving into their current space in a marginal section of downtown Orlando, they’ve [Clean the World] upgraded their machinery. Now, one machine grinds the used soap down to pellets that resemble broken crayons. Then, with a quick change of parts, it mixes the ground-up soap with glycerine and water, shapes the goo into a long brick, then slices it with the precision of a master chef. The finished products, honeydew green in color and smelling of spring freshness, roll down the belt. The squares unceremoniously drop into cardboard boxes, ready for shipment to faraway lands.  — (“Clean the World: Hotel Soaps That Care”, The Washington Post, Jan. 8, 2012)

“Hope in a Bar of Soap” on Orlando’s FOX 35

Can I please get an “AMEN” from anyone who was watching the 10:00 news on FOX 35 in Orlando last night?

Aw yeah … that’s what I’m talkin’ about 🙂

Less than a week after we returned from Haiti, the local FOX affiliate ran a story on our Orlando-based charity. But there’s no sense in me telling you about it when you can watch for yourself 🙂

Check it out:

Now that you’ve had a chance to watch the story, please send this page link to your friends, family … anyone you know in the hotel industry or in the corporate world who might be able to help us out.

Start looking through all those business cards you’ve collected from people over the years. I bet you know someone who can help. There are a million people in Cap Haitien waiting for a regular supply of soap.
