Plum Point fifth grader initiates soap drive

Plum Point Elementary School Principal Joyce King was a little taken aback when one of her fifth graders came to her with not only a proposal, but tentative dates and a flier for how to present her idea to the school.
The idea was for the entire school to participate in a “Clean the World” soap drive, which the student, 11-year-old Amitha Patel, read about in a Jan. 8 article from The Washington Post’s travel section titled “A green, clean recycling machine.”
Amitha explained that the article states that Clean the World, a three-year-old Orlando, Fla.-based nonprofit, was started by two men who wondered how much soap was thrown out in hotels without even being touched and how this soap could help others.
Since then Clean the World’s initiative, Amitha said, has been to collect both new and used soap and then sanitizing it and molding it into same-size bars, which are distributed to third-world countries.
“People in third-world countries, they don’t have soap so they get more diseases,” Amitha said.
She said she and King decided to hold the drive in the spring and from April 30 to May 14, students were encouraged to bring in at least one bar of soap.
“They had a contest where whatever grade brought in the most soap got treated to ice cream at recess … a little friendly competition,” Amitha said.
Amitha and her fellow fifth grade friends, Carissa and Bailey Lauer, Mia Isaac, Sydney Koteff, Tori Howard and Mary George Gipson, counted the soap totals on Tuesday and came to a total of 220.4 pounds of soap for the whole school.
The third grade won the grade contest with 67.85 pounds of soap.
King said she expected the students to count the soap by bars, but it was actually Amitha’s idea to count it by ounces and then divide the number of ounces by 16 to get the total pounds.
Amitha said counting by ounces made more sense because several of the bars were different sizes.
“That was totally on their own, I had no input on that,” King said with a chuckle. “It amazes me the leadership that Amitha displays.”
The final numbers indicate that the kindergarteners collected 40.8 pounds; the first graders collected 17.8 pounds; the second graders collected 31.9 pounds; the fourth graders collected 41.2 pounds; and the fifth graders collected 20.7 pounds.
Amitha and her friends made the final soap count announcement on the school’s morning TV show.

Gaylord Hotels Partners with Clean the World

Summary: Four Gaylord Hotels properties in the United States will recycle soaps and bottled amenities to stop the spread of preventable diseases worldwide

Gaylord Hotels, has deepened its commitment to sustainability by partnering with Clean the World to recycle soaps and bottled amenities at all four Gaylord properties in North America — Gaylord National (Washington, D.C.), Gaylord Opryland (Nashville, Tenn.), Gaylord Palms (Orlando, Fla.), and Gaylord Texan (Dallas, Texas).

Clean the World projects that the entire Gaylord Hotels portfolio, representing 8,050 hotel rooms, will collect nearly 447,000 soap bars (more than 84,000 lbs. of soap) and 62,500 lbs. of bottled amenities (shampoos, conditioners, body washes, lotions and gels) each year for distribution to children and families in domestic homeless shelters, women’s shelters, and rescue missions. The sanitized and recycled amenities will also be included in sustainable hygiene kits for foreign distribution to orphanages, schools, medical clinics, and missions.

Gilchrist & Soames, a leading hospitality amenities provider, was instrumental in executing this partnership on behalf of Clean the World. All four Gaylord Hotels participating in this agreement feature Gilchrist & Soames amenities in their hotel rooms, which will be recycled after guest use as hygiene supplies for children and families in communities where soap and bottled amenities are in great demand, but short supply.
Through this partnership, housekeeping staff at each Gaylord Hotel property will collect and ship hotel guest room amenities to Clean the World for recycling and distribution to disadvantaged communities in the United States, Canada, and more than 45 countries. All shipping costs via Clean the World’s corporate partner UPS are included as part of the Clean the World program. Recent distributions of soaps and hygiene kits have been made to communities in Dominican Republic, East Timor, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Kenya, Madagascar, Nicaragua and Sierra Leone.

More Soap Drive Success Stories

Naked hair stylists, prep school students, sustainability sisters, church groups, a local hospitality partner, and realtor associations. All have made recent soap donations to help Clean the World.

More than 329 lbs. of soap and bottled amenities were donated from various sources in the past few weeks by eager supporters of Clean the World from around the United States. And we are receiving more boxes, bins, and bags full of hygiene products each day.

Naked Hair Salon & More! of Delray Beach, Fla., donated 15 lbs. of soaps and bottled amenities donated by their clients. In fairness, the hair stylists are not naked, but the owners of Naked Hair Salon and More! couldn’t “bare” to see good beauty products go to waste. They organized a donation at the south Florida salon as a way to “give back to our environment” and limit landfill waste. The hygiene products were shipped via Clean the World corporate partner UPS to the Orlando recycling operations center in early May. “Thank you for allowing us to partner with you to make a difference,” they wrote.

Lake Highland Preparatory School in Orlando, Fla. conducted a soap drive as a service leadership project by its elementary school students after a visit by Clean the World in April. The students collected 77 lbs. of soaps and shampoos, which were dropped off in-person at the Orlando facility. “Your presentation worked,” said the students.

Allison and Jillian Samowitz, twin sisters from Golden Beach, Fla. who were featured in Reader’s Digest earlier this year, visited Clean the World’s Orlando headquarters and brought a gift of 28 lbs. of soap collected from their classmates at Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The sisters, who met Clean the World CEO Shawn Seipler as both received Sustainable Florida Best Practices Awards last year, have formed an organization called Proseed2Green, which promotes environmental awareness in small communities. “We wanted to support this incredible cause,” they said.

Wyndham Bonnet Creek Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., a local Clean the World partner, hosted a soap drive and collected 113 lbs. of store-bought soaps from hotel employees and friends. That’s above and beyond the guest-room amenities collections we regularly receive from this partner. Love to see that extra effort and passion helps save lives around the world.

After hearing an NPR interview that featured Clean the World, a group of women at Our Lady of the Wayside Church in Arlington Heights, Ill., organized a community soap drive. The Christian Family Movement group collected 62 lbs. of soaps, hand sanitizers, shampoos, lotions and gels from parishioners and community residents.

“One of the missions of Christian Family Movement is to perform actions that promote social justice. This soap drive was a perfect fit for us,” they wrote.

And NAIOP, a commercial real estate trade association in Herndon, Va., organized a Clean the World soap drive over a two-week period after learning about Clean the World from our amenities partner, LATHER. The collection netted 16 lbs. of soaps and amenities for people in need.
