Clean the World is delighted to support Radisson Hotel Manchester City Centre, the UK’s first Verified Net Zero hotel. The 252-room property is setting a new standard in the hospitality industry, combining world-class guest experiences with verified environmental responsibility. We are proud to be recognised as a trusted solution for managing the hotel’s in-room plastic amenities.

A Hotel Committed to Climate Action

Radisson’s Verified Net Zero hotels commit to achieving Net Zero by 2040. To reach this milestone, they follow the Net Zero Methodology for Hotels developed by the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance. This industry-validated framework provides a transparent, science-based roadmap, aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and verified by TÜV Rheinland.

The Net Zero Methodology is Implemented in Five Key Steps:

  • 2025: Calculation of emissions and creation of a decarbonization action plan
  • 2030: Procurement of renewable electricity and offsetting of residual emissions
  • 2035: Reduction of offsetting and increased decarbonisation
  • 2040: Maximum emissions reduction and offsetting of all remaining emissions
  • 2050: Intensive decarbonisation of the value chain and minimisation of residual emissions

The methodology also provides clear guidance to help set a Net Zero commitment:

  1. Establish a baseline from which to pursue a Net Zero target
  2. Define emissions boundaries, including Scope 1, 2, and 3
  3. Plan a Net Zero pathway with five-year milestones
  4. Understand value chain relationships across tourism and real estate
  5. Begin immediate implementation of the Net Zero action plan

All targets and actions are third-party verified by TÜV Rheinland, ensuring measurable impact, transparency, and accountability.

Discover Radisson Hotel Manchester City Centre: A Verified Net Zero Hotel

Nestled in the heart of Manchester, just steps from the AO Arena and Manchester Victoria Station, Radisson Hotel Manchester City Centre is a vibrant, Scandinavian-inspired space with 252 calming rooms and suites, seven event spaces, a spa, heated indoor pool, gym, restaurant, and rooftop terrace. But what sets this hotel apart isn’t just style, it’s substance.

The hotel operates entirely on 100% renewable electricity, with no fossil fuels used on-site. Gas cooking has been eliminated, replaced by induction technology and heat pumps for hot water, heating, and ventilation. This shift alone has drastically lowered the building’s emissions footprint.

The hotel has already reduced its total carbon footprint by 60%. The remaining emissions are offset through nature-based carbon removal credits from Danish agri-tech company Agreena, resulting in a fully net zero footprint, calculated in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

Understanding Emissions: Scope 1, 2, and 3

  • Scope 1 emissions relate to on-site fossil fuel use. These have been fully eliminated at the hotel through electrification.
  • Scope 2 emissions refer to purchased electricity, heating, and cooling—also zeroed out through verified renewable sourcing.
  • Scope 3 emissions encompass operational and supply chain activities. These are actively being reduced through innovative partnerships and policies.

A Milestone Moment for Sustainable Hospitality

As Radisson Hotel Group unveils its first Verified Net Zero property, the commitment is clear.

Austin Eaton, Clean the World’s Head of Marketing for Europe and the UK, attended the media day in Manchester on 25 June to represent Clean the World, with our partnership with Radisson highlighting our growing role in sustainable hotel operations across the UK and EU.

A Blueprint for What’s Next

Radisson Hotel Manchester City Centre is not only delivering comfort and design, it’s proving that sustainability in hospitality can be data-driven, scalable, and replicable.

Through science-based frameworks, strong partnerships, and third-party verification, the hotel is showing what’s possible when bold commitments meet real action.

Clean the World is proud to play a key part in this journey and will continue working with forward-thinking hotel groups to help make waste reduction and circularity a defining feature of Net Zero travel.

FAQs

A Verified Net Zero Hotel is a property that has been independently audited and certified to produce net zero carbon emissions across its operations. This means that any carbon emissions it generates are either eliminated or offset through credible methods, in alignment with science-based targets and verified by third parties like TÜV Rheinland. The verification ensures transparency and accountability in the hotel’s climate action.

Clean the World partners with hotels to collect and recycle discarded soap bars and plastic bottled amenities, turning them into life-saving hygiene kits for communities in need. By reducing waste sent to landfills and supporting global health efforts, Clean the World helps hotels meet their sustainability and CSR goals. In the case of the Radisson Hotel Manchester City Centre, Clean the World is the trusted partner managing the hotel’s in-room plastic amenity recycling — a critical component of sustainable operations.

The Net Zero Methodology for Hotels, developed by the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, is a science-based roadmap for the hospitality industry to achieve net zero emissions by 2040. It outlines 5 key milestones:

  • 2025: Measure carbon footprint and create an action plan

  • 2030: Switch to renewable electricity and begin offsetting

  • 2035: Reduce offsets through deeper decarbonization

  • 2040: Reach maximum decarbonization and minimal offsetting

This framework aligns with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and is validated by global certification bodies.

Radisson Hotel Manchester City Centre becoming the UK’s first Verified Net Zero Hotel sets a powerful precedent for the hospitality industry. It proves that large-scale hotels can operate responsibly without compromising guest experience. This achievement reflects a commitment to measurable climate action, third-party validation, and industry leadership — making Radisson a model for other hotels aiming to meet Net Zero by 2040.
